The Tower of London

His majesties Royal Palace and Fortress The Tower of London (More commonly known as the Tower of London) is a historic prison built in 1066.

The Tower of London is situated on the North Bank of the river Thames, London, England. England is in the Northern Hemisphere and is in Northern Europe. The Tower lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of London by an open space known as Tower Hill.

Four stone walls of defense surround the tower giving it a square shape. Comprising four towers it is constructed from grey stone. The Tower Tower of London is a complex with several rooms within the four walls. There is no permanent torture chamber in The Tower of London.Tower Green is where the executions were held.

William the Conqueror built The Tower in 1066 to cement the Northern conquest of England. It was built to provide a fortress and prison. Also it was built to store the Crown Jewels. Tradition is that the monarch spends the night before their coronation at The Tower.

From 1100 onwards The Tower of London has been used as a prison.  During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the Tower was used the most. Many members of the royal family have been imprisoned in The Tower including Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth I as a princess, the princes, Katherine Howard ,Lady Jane Grey and many more. 112 executions have taken place at The Tower only seven of them were inside The Tower walls.

It has been rumoured that the ghost of Anne Boleyn (wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I executed in 1536)haunts the Tower.Also the ghosts of Lady Jane Grey(great-granddaughter of Henry VII executed in 1554), Margaret Pole(executed by Henry VIII in 1541) and several others have also been seen haunting The Tower. People have said they have seen on several occasions  the ghost of Anne Boleyn walking around the chapel of St Peter and Vincula where she is buried carrying her head under her arm.

The Tower of London is a historic, fascinating and big building that has been in England nearly 1,000 years.
